In this week, we talked about Weebly. By using Weebly, we can create websites in an easy way. We can log in Weebly freely with an e-mail account.  It is simple to use because we can add text, images, videos, map etc. by only dragging and dropping them into the page. To conduct the page, there are basic options on the left of the page. We can build and design our sites with the help of these options. Key words: “Drag and Drop”.  We can make changes over options whatever we want. In this lesson, especially we focused on how to add title, text, images, and slideshow. Secondly, we focused on how to add YouTube link and how to embed. We can add our WordPress addresses by using RSS. Briefly, Weebly is a practical site in order to create unique Websites.

Digital Storytelling

This week, we talked about digital storytelling. There are several websites “storyjumper, dfilm.com, storynory.com” in order to create different and enjoyable stories.

In Storynory.com, there are numerous stories which include original stories, fairytales, classic, educational and stories for young children. If we use these stories in the class, we can download them as a record. In addition to, we can change the stories with the help of Movie Maker.

Storyjumper.com is an online platform to create stories by using the sections of props, scenes, photos, text. When we finish our stories, we can’t download them freely.

Dfilm.com is online program to make our films on the web. It is totally free. We can use easily by following directions which is given. We can select our characters, scenes and music. This site is more practical and enjoyable. We can download our films by sending them to our e-mail accounts.

WizIQ & Google Hangouts

This week, we talked about WizIQ, Google Plus and Google Hangouts.

The first one was WizIQ. It is an online learning platform both teachers and students. In this platform, teacher can create online learning environment and share PPT, PDF, or Word documents with the help of White board. Students can join there and make contact with each other. During the course, the students can follow on a table in their teacher’s page. On the other hand, there is a disadvantage. This platform is limited to access ten people. If you want to increase the number of attendees, you must use premium account.

The second and third one were Google plus and Google Hangouts. They are social websites which can be used for conference. In this platform, we can improve the speaking ability of the students. Teacher can create a speaking environment by using webcams and microphones. Teacher can set a topic, the students can join via the video call and they can communicate with each other.

And More Than One Thing

The first topic of this week was Nicenet. It is a learning platform to be created for education like Edmodo. As a teacher, we can create a class and invite the students to the class on Nicenet. We can share a topic and students discuss about topic in this platform. It is thought that it is like a forum. Of course, there is an impractical side. We can’t share any photograph or anything else.  In addition to, it is fast in order to be able to share only written documents. I think Edmodo is more attractive than Nicenet.

The second topic was Dokeos. It is a shareware application but it was free before. It isn’t reliable software because our files might be deleted when we use it freely.

The third one was Edmodo. It isn’t strange for us because we follow the assignment of the CALL course on Edmodo. We can log in as a teacher or as a student. In this platform, teachers can make assignments that could be easily informed by the students. We can create small groups and students can join to the group by logging in the given group code.

The last one was Prezi.  It is an application in order to prepare a presentation.  Powerpoint is more popular than Prezi, but Prezi is more impressive than Powerpoint. It has visual richness. The only negative side of it is to need the Internet to edit it when we make a mistake.  That’s all I can say.

Socrative & QR Code

In the lesson, there were two important questions. The first one was “Do you use smart phone?” and the other was “What do you use your smart phone for?” Of course, we use it for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp… Besides, most of us use it for the dictionary. When we think of the point of education, using dictionary is limited. And then, it is time to learn mobile applications about education more. We started the day by downloading Merriam Webster that is a useful dictionary. For me, the most important feature is to be able to use it without an Internet connection. Actually, topics of the week were Socrative and QR Code. Socrative may be the most enjoyable application used in education. In this platform, we can log in as a student or teacher. If we log in as a teacher, we can make quizzes, ask questions (multiple choices, true false questions, short answers). We can create a competition environment by dividing the students into groups. If we log in as students, we can learn while having fun. We don’t need to share our names so we can answer the question inner peace. This application makes the students motivated more. Now, we will move to QR Code. QR Code is like a closed book. It is hard to know what will be from inside of it. We can create a code which includes our names, e-mail addresses, numbers whatever we want it. In addition to, we can add links etc. It is a barcode system. When it takes a photo, we can inform what it is about. It is useful application because a lot of things that we need are at our fingertips.

This Far, No Further

This week, we focused on Edmodo, Pbworks, Wiki and Google documents. Firstly, we talked about the features of Edmodo. Actually, it is a learning platform being created for education. It is easy to use. In this platform, teachers can make assignments that could be easily informed by the students. In addition to, students can work collaboratively with their classmates via the Internet etc. Another one was Pbworks. If my memory doesn’t fail me, we can discuss our ideas, work collaboratively with our classmates, share our works. Besides, we can work with more than one person on the same file with the help of Pbworks. Especially, this system is time saving and effective way while working in groups. I wish I had known this system earlier. Previously I encountered many problems in group’s presentation because of my ignorance. Whatever… We watched a video about Wiki after all of these websites. Wiki has two essential “edit” and “save”. Many people can write their opinions about any topic so it is an invalid source in the academic area. Maybe we use it in order to form an opinion. Like I said before, we can’t use it academically. Lastly, we mentioned about the functions Google documents. We can create documents, save files, store pdf, word and excel files thanks to Google documents. This time, the topics were covered very quickly. Sometimes, I couldn’t understand what happened. Sometimes I couldn’t follow him. And sometimes, the Internet couldn’t keep up with me. It seems as if we jump from one thing to the other.

Discover the World

In the lesson, we have learnt some useful programs that help us in many areas. Now, we look at them briefly. The first one is WordPress. It is a blog that everyone can write in any subject. These subjects could be any news or comments. In this platform, you can express your opinions in your own words and anyone can follow your blog. In addition to, for using this program very well, we have discovered dashboard including posts, pages, stats, sharing, and change theme.

The second ones are RSS and Feedly. Feedly is a program to collect the websites you follow. By this way, you can read all news easily and quickly without any effort. RSS is like Feedly. It is also the quickest way to reach all websites you like.

The last ones are Twitter and Twitterfall. Twitter is one of the most popular ways to communicate with people. I have used it for two years actively. I follow people and groups and read their pages, thus, I can learn what people are thinking or I can get news immediately. It is because of being active user on twitter. Of course, the advantages are not limited to these ones. It is also a universal platform and people are sharing all things about their lives or others. Turning to the Twitterfall, it is a good application to be informed about events by using hashtags.

Technology affects the most part of the education life, because the Internet and computers are one of the important ways to provide students for the materials. Computers are not only gain time but also practice more for language learning. However, students can inform from the changing world and keep up with it easier.

Now, we will look at the three phases that Warschauer divided. These are;

1)      Behavioristic CALL

2)      Communicative CALL

3)      Integrative CALL

Behavioristic CALL

It can be referred to as “drill and practice”. “Drill and practice courseware is based on the model of computer as tutor.” (Taylor 1980). In this sentence, computer is a tool to provide the students for the necessary materials. Also, a number of CALL tutoring systems were developed to give an example; “The PLATO system included vocabulary drills, brief grammar explanations and drills, and translations tests at various.” (Ahmad, Corbett, Rogers, & Sussex 1985). Unfortunately, in the late 1970s and early 1980s this phase lost its importance because of the negative critics to the behavioristic approach’s theoretical and the pedagogical level.

Communicative CALL

This phase was based on the communicative approach. The communicative approach focused on using the language rather than analysis of the language and the important thing was to communication with each other. Moreover; “In these programs, like the drill and practice programs mentioned above, the computer remains the “knower-of-the-right-answer.” (Taylor & Perez 1989:3). Again unfortunately, this phase is thought not to be integrated. So, the new phase disappeared.

Integrative CALL

Integrative CALL has two parts “multimedia computers” and “the Internet”.

Multimedia computers

Multimedia computers with hypermedia creates authentic learning environment. (listening is combined with seeing).  So, four skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) are easily integrated in a single activity. Students might check their own learning by going forward and backwards to different parts of the program.

The Internet

While using the Internet, students can reach the millions of information immediately and publish their texts or multimedia materials to share with partner classes or with the general public via the Internet.

While learning language, the most important thing is to communicate. Computers are efficient tools because we can easily reach the variety sources. Also, they give a chance to reach information whatever the students want in an instant and share their own products with their classmates. Furthermore, the students can use the authentic materials and learn effectively with the help of real life situations.

The Course CALLed “CALL”

When I think about the impact of the technology on language learning, taking CALL course in the last period of our education lives might be an indicator of belatedness. Instead of taking advantages of CALL course’s opportunities, we used colourful cartoons, worksheets etc. in the ELT classrooms. In favour of using technology in the class, it may be watching a video or singing a song via the Internet. That’s all. Why don’t we use the technology for language learning? It can be explained by only one thing. It is an irony.

In place of traditional language teaching in the classrooms, current computer technology has come into prominence recently. CALL course provides us how to use technology and the programs about language learning in the classroom. It gives us point of the different views. Thus, when we become teachers, it will help us to be equipped better.

The technology changes continuously and rapidly, so it is hard to keep up with the technology. We have to follow the changes about it. In other words, we have to update our knowledge related to the technology every time. Only then, we can claim that we are using it efficiently.
